Five Real Time Lumion Captures:
My theory is related to the physical relationship between architecture and its environment, thus integrating 'smart', kinetic elements which actively responded to its surroundings.
WITH INTEGRATED TEXTURES

Contextually, the basic geometric block form of the bridge greater suits the UNSW surroundings without looking outlandish. The simplicity of the bridge design enables the focus to be on the innovative moving elements, responsive to their surroundings.

Lined rooftop, a moving element which responds to the environment and can close into a smooth roof surface. Allows natural light to access the architecture whilst also allowing control.

The main entrance to the bridged school. The architecture highlights the integration of natural lighting into design through the use of large glass faces on the main facade. The sliding sunblock shades are also evident on the window to the right of the image.

View of the two-storey studio space with a mezzanine, with the workshop block to the right side of the image (with sunblock shades spread out, as a moving element). This is a demonstration of the use of the glass windows to exploit natural lighting, whilst also being able to control the amount and duration that it is received at through moving elements.

Not forcefully disregarding the geometry in place of organic shapes. Rather using the contrast between geometric and natural forms to highlight how man made forms can merge and interact with its environment.

Moving Elements:

Sliding Sun Shades:
Can spread out the width of the windowsill and collect at one end where necessary. Enables the adjustment of lighting within a room.
BEFORE: Spread out throughout the window length

AFTER: Bunched Up Sun Shades

Patterned Roofing:
The lined, angled roofing can adjust the amount of lighting received by the entire bridge. When activated, the lined gaps will close, creating a smooth roof without any gaps for light to leak through.

Smooth roof to shield the rooms from overbearing, incoming lightsource.

Roof expansion, lines become exposed thus enabling the lightsource to shine through.

1. Location, Planning and Connections to Surrounding Buildings:

When deciding what surrounding buildings to link to the Squarehouse, the needs of users of the school were considered. With a focus on user well-being, I chose two buildings, the:
  • UNSW Fitness and Aquatic Centre: Physical activity can aid and improve psychological, emotional and physical health.
  • Roundhouse: An essential part of university lifestyle is the socialisation and relationship between students, which also benefits psychological health. As it regularly holds social events and also sells food and drink, it is a great place for student interaction.
